Leather

We love leather! As a natural product, leather is the face of our seating furniture. We carefully select the skins for quality! The natural character of the skin should remain visible. Appreciate the natural character and any imperfections in the leather that highlight the character of your furniture and its leather.

Information about leather

A residual product with special qualities

General

Leather is made from a hide. Each skin gives a unique picture of how the animal lived. During tanning, natural features cannot be removed such as insect bites, scars or dung stains.

These characteristics make the difference between a natural product like leather and synthetically manufactured materials. The latter will never be able to match the naturalness of leather. Leather is a waste product of the meat industry. In the furniture industry, we almost always use cattle hides because they are stiff and large.

Natural features

As a natural product, leather is face defining for LABEL Vandenberg seating. We carefully select the skins for quality. The natural character of the skin should remain visible. Appreciate the natural character and any imperfections in the leather that highlight the character of your furniture and its leather. Natural characteristics include: local color difference, scars, mutual difference in texture and grain, insect bites and pigment spots. The following images show natural characteristics of the leather. These marks, which do not mean inferior quality but rather underline the authenticity of the leather, show the unadulterated robustness of the leather. In LABEL Vandenberg’s philosophy, character and quality of material determine the individuality of each piece of furniture. In addition, the leather is dyed aniline through and through. Thus, it maintains the transparency needed to give depth and full expression to the colors.

How it is made

By tanning the skin, it is preserved and processed into a beautiful and durable final product.

In the tannery, the hide is processed into full (furniture) leather that we can use on our seating furniture. And that requires quite a bit of work, think: hair removal, soaking, liming, defleshing, brining, tanning, coloring and finishing.

Learning Qualities

At LABEL Vandenberg, we work with 2 leather qualities:

Full-grain leather
Full-grain leather is not sanded or polished to remove natural stains or surface imperfections. Full-grain leather leaves the entire or full grain of the hide intact, including natural scars and marks. It absorbs moisture and oil and over time will develop a beautiful patina that looks better as the item ages. In full-grain leather, we offer two types:

Aniline leather
:
It is dyed through and through with dyes so all characteristics remain visible.
Semi-aniline leather: This leather is also dyed through and through. It has a thin protective pigment layer, which protects it from stains and abrasion.

Topnerf leather
Topnerf leather has the second highest leather quality. The surface has been sanded and a finish coat may have been added. In top grain leather, we offer three types: Aniline leather & Semi-aniline leather: see above. Pigmented/printed leather: This leather has a heavy protective topcoat including pigmentation and possibly a print. With this leather, you no longer see natural characteristics.
